B. Verlene Whetsel, 90, of Craig, Mo., passed away on Aug. 22, 2018 at a Mound City, Mo. care center.
She was born May 17, 1928 to William and Josie (Hawkins) Byrd in Cumi, Ark. On June 17, 1946 she married Donald Whetsel in Hiawatha, Kan. He passed away in 1996.
Verlene worked as a bookkeeper at Singleton’s Garage. She also worked at McDonald’s in Rock Port, Mo. Verlene attended the First Church of God in Craig, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband, Verlene was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael; brothers, Orville, Grover, and Truman; and sisters, Stella Ellis and Beulah Queen.
Survivors include her son, Larry Whetsel of Craig; daughter-in-law, Candy Whetsel of Craig; four grandchildren, Ellie (Paul) James, Jenny Payton, Jarod (Kayla) Whetsel, and Josie-Erin (Jesse) Yocum; 11 great grandchildren, Chloe James, Ben Morris, Cory Stevens, Zack Stevens, Bella Whetsel, Cameran Knapp, Caiden Whetsel, Lincoln Whetsel, Verity Whetsel, Daelynn Yocum, and Emersyn Yocum; one great-great grandchild, Maci Jean Morris; and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services: Mon., Aug. 27, 2018, 11:00 am, First Church of God, Craig. Family will greet friends one hour prior to the services. Interment: Craig I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the First Church of God, or the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
