Betty Joan “Betty Jo” Lewis was born on March 15, 1934 in Elmo, Missouri. She was the daughter of Edna Mae (Brownfield) Nuckolls and William Kerns.
Betty attended the Horace Mann School in Maryville.
In 1955 she married Milo Lewis. He preceded her in death.
Betty Jo worked as a waitress in several area restaurants, including the former Walnut Inn in Tarkio and Trails End in Rock Port.
Betty Jo passed away at the Community Hospital in Fairfax on March 5, 2016 at the age of 81.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Milo Lewis; son, Jerry Kelley; stepson, Drexel Lewis; infant sons, Perry David and Leo Lewis; and infant daughter, Joanna Fay Lewis.
Survivors include her children, Gary Kelley and Larry Lewis of St. Joseph, Bill Lewis of Peru, Nebraska, Becky Chard of Rock Port, Joy Barton of Elkhorn, Nebraska, Patty Kozial of McHenry, Illinois, and Tammy Lewis of Rock Port; stepdaughters, Carol Jean Hines of Barnard, Missouri and Shirley Lewis of Sidney, Iowa; several brothers and sisters, including youngest brother Gary Nuckolls, whom she was very close to; 15 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Betty Jo enjoyed gardening, crocheting and playing Blues on the piano. Her family remembers her as a very good cook, especially her homemade bread.
