David Lee “Dave” Holland was born on Oct. 9, 1932 in St. Joseph, Mo. He was the only child of Homer and Rosa (Winfrey) Holland. Dave graduated from Lafayette High School in 1950, where he excelled in music. He then attended St. Joseph Junior College before enlisting in the United States Navy.
While stationed in Washington D. C. he met and married Kelly Freeman, who worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Dave and Kelly transferred to San Juan Puerto Rico where he Dave was assigned to the Admirals Band at the Naval Air Station.
Following the birth of their son, the Holland family returned to the Midwest, moving to Maryville, Mo. Dave completed his music degree from Northwest Missouri Teacher’s College.
His teaching career began at Quitman, Skidmore and Maitland School districts. In 1962 Dave accepted a teaching position at Holt County R-II School District in Mound City. He taught instrumental music there for 29 years.
Sharing his love of music was one of his greatest joys. He enjoyed keeping in touch with his former students and considered them an extension of his family.
He formed the Dave Holland Orchestra in 1955. He was also Community Band Director for the Fourth of July, and was inducted into the Holt County Music Hall of Fame. He was active in the St. Joseph Big Band and performed with the Platte City Community Band the day before his death.
After his retirement, he enjoyed spending with his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He and Kelly enjoyed a trip to Europe for their 50 th wedding anniversary.
He served on the Music Advisory Board for the Missouri State High School Activities Association, the Mound City State Theatre, Fine Arts Board and the Mound City Council.
David passed away on Monday, Oct. 24, 2016 at his Mound City home at the age of 84.
Dave is survived by his wife, Kelly, children, David (Alice) of Platte City, Mo., Steve (Angelita) of Hercules, Calif., Julia (Dave) Pollock of Anita, Iowa, and Greg of Kansas City, Mo. His grandchildren are Ethan (Kristen) Holland of Austin, Tex., Emily Holland , Kansas City, Mo., Joel Holland of Kansas City, Mo., Kimberly Holland of New York City, New York, Edward Holland of Hercules, Calif., Jamie (Anthony) Mocarski of Chicago, Ill., Katie Pollock and her finance, Rory Malqueen, of Chicago, Ill., and Matthew Holland of Kansas City, Mo. His great grandchildren are Claire and Griffen Holland of Austin, Tex., and John David “Jack” and Clare Mocarski of Chicago, Ill.
