Douglas A. “Doug” Thayer was born Sept. 23, 1944 to Isaac and Ola (Pope) Thayer in Fairfax, Missouri. Doug graduated from Fairfax High School in 1963.
Doug served overseas in the U.S. Air Force, the Reserves and the National Guard for a total of 26 years.
On Aug. 7, 1971 he married Karen Turner, and they became parents of two sons. They lived in California for 11 years, where he worked for Gallo Winery. They returned to Atchison County in the early 1990’s.
Doug worked as a machinist for Eaton Corporation in Shenandoah, Iowa for 10 years, and most recently for Kawasaki in Maryville, Missouri.
Doug passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016 at the Pleasant View care center at the age of 71.
Preceding him in death were his parents; infant brother, Johnny Thayer; infant sister, Helen U. Thayer; and sister, Hope Elaine Wynes.
Survivors include his wife, Karen, of their Tarkio home; sons, Jerry L. (Kim) Thayer of Abilene, Texas and Jason D. Thayer of Tarkio; brother, Marvin (Tanya “Bo”) Thayer of Council Bluffs, Iowa; sister, Lola Mae (Gary) Sons of Shenandoah; and nieces and nephews.
Doug enjoyed gardening, hunting, and watching old Westerns. He also enjoyed playing with Peepers the cat. Doug was a member of the Fairfax Baptist Church.
