Lt. Detective Gregory "G" Chamberlain II, of Fremont, passed away at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Neb., on Monday, April 20, 2009, at the age of 56.
He was born in Hamburg, Iowa, on December 29, 1952. He was the second of six children born to Gregory W. and Betty R. (Smith) Chamberlain. G grew up in Rock Port and graduated from Rock Port High School in 1970. He attended Missouri Western State College in St. Joseph. G's career in law enforcement began with the Rock Port City Police Department in 1973. He moved to Fremont in October of 1976 when he joined the Fremont Police Department.
In 1974 G married Gail Steele, and they became parents of one daughter, Meghan. They later divorced. On Oct. 11, 1997, G married Lorrie Justus. They made their home in Fremont with daughter Ashley, where G continued to protect and serve the community and the state of Nebraska in various positions. He rose through the ranks of the Fremont Police Department with promotions to Detective in 1981, Sergeant in 1989, and Lieutenant in 1995. He remained employed with the city as Lt. Detective, and had been with the department for nearly 36 years. He was a member of the Fremont S.W.A.T. Team. G served as Security Director for Midland Lutheran College for 20 years. He also had a keen interest in emergency medicine, and attended the first Nebraska EMT Instructor class in 1979. He taught EMS classes throughout Nebraska, Missouri, Colorado and Utah. G served on the statewide EMS planning committee from its inception, and served as its president for many years. He received numerous awards through the association, and was voted into the Nebraska EMS Hall of Fame in 2003.
He was a member of Fraternal Order of Police, the Nebraska Emergency Medical Association, former member of the Masonic Lodge at Rock Port, Missouri, and served as president of the Dodge County Humane Society. He took the Nebraska Master Gardener Class through the Nebraska Extension Office, and did volunteer gardening at the May Museum.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother; paternal grandparents, George and Hazel (Wheeler) Chamberlain, and Walter and Goldie (Beam) Smith.
G is survived by his parents, Greg and Betty of Rock Port; his wife, Lorrie, of their Fremont home; daughters, Meghan Chamberlain of Weatherford, Oklahoma, and Ashley and her husband, Brett Slegl of Omaha, Nebraska; brothers, Eric and wife Lynn of Rock Port; Scott and wife, Irene of Dumfries, Virginia, Chris and friend, Melissa Masonbrink of Rock Port; sister, Marcy and husband Mark McMahon of Rock Port; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Pam and Kevin Overholt of Shawnee, Kansas and Mark and Kathy Sue Justus of Anchorage, Alaska; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Aderin and Lois Justus of Fremont; nieces and nephews, Aubrey and husband Cory Scamman; Hillary Chamberlain, Brett Chamberlain, Donald L. Parsons, Michael and wife Constance Chamberlain, Philip Roberson, Jared, Jalainey, Jayden, Journey, and Jacie McMahon, Chase and Catyn Chamberlain, Max Overholt, and Roy and Logan Justus.
Greg loved animals, especially his four-legged children, his Goldens, Daisy and River; his Sheltie, Rilee; and Maine Coon cats, Tater and Angel. He was deeply saddened by the loss of his Golden, Aslan.
In his spare time G enjoyed golf, gardening and cooking. Times spent with family and friends always involved G telling colorful and humorous stories about his police work and arrests. Those stories usually ended with laughter and G saying, "How did they think they wouldn't get caught?"
Family visitation: Thursday evening April 23, 2009, 6 pm to 8 pm, Moser Funeral Chapel, 2170 N. Somers, Fremont. Memorial service with police honor guard: Friday, April 24, 2009, 10 am, Church of the Nazarene, 960 Johnson Road, Fremont. Family visitation: Saturday, April 25, 2009, 10 am, followed by memorial services at 11 am, United Methodist Church, Rock Port. Inurnment: Greenhill Cemetery, Rock Port. Memorials: The Fraternal Order of Police No. 37, Shop with a Cop program, in care of the Fremont Police Department or the Statewide Emergency Medical Services Program.
