Hershel G. Hughes was born on September 17, 1929 near Oregon, Missouri, the youngest of five children of Mitchell and Celia (Carr) Hughes.
Hershel was a 1947 graduate of Fillmore High School and a lifetime area farmer. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
On December 11, 1950 Hershel married Pat Cooksey. She preceded him in death in 2015.
Also preceding him in death were his sisters, Opal Hood, Lola Ward, Darlene Douglas and Mavis Ourant; nephew, Robbie Ourant; Pat’s namesake, Patricia “Trishie” Stinnett; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Glenn and Bonnie Cooksey.
Survivors include his children, Glenn (Dee) Hughes and Mike Hughes, all of Oregon, Ronda (Steve) Jameson of McFall, Missouri, Jeff (Becky) Hughes of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Michelle Grimes of Oregon; 11 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
