James R. Schoonover

James R. “Scuddy” Schoonover, 86, lifetime resident of Mound City, passed away on Good Friday, April 18, 2014 at a Lincoln, Nebraska hospital.

He was born in Mound City on July 30, 1927, to parents William D. and Orpha L. (Browning) Schoonover. James graduated from Mound City High School in 1945, and then served in the U.S. Army Air Corp from 1946 to 1947.

On April 16, 1950 he married Faire N. Drewes in Savannah, Missouri. Together they founded Schoonover Oil Company in Mound City. Scuddy was active in the Mound City community and several business associations. If he wasn’t working, he was attending one of his grandchildren’s events.

He was preceded in death by his parents; half-brothers, W. D. Schoonover II and Raymond Schoonover; and son-in-law, Tommy Quick.

He is survived by a large and loving family, including his wife of 64 years, Faire, of their Mound City home; children and spouses, Jon (Kayla) Schoonover, Fairfax, Missouri; Jill (Dave) Asher, Mound City, Gay Quick, Oregon, Missouri, and Bryce (Patty) Schoonover, Mound City; fourteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and a community of friends.

Services: Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 10:30 am at the Christian Fellowship Church, Mound City. Interment with military rites: Mount Hope Cemetery. Family visitation: 6:00 pm to 8:30 pm Monday, Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City. Memorials:  Christian Fellowship Church, the old Mound City Cemetery, or the Mound City Rural Fire Department.
