Joann Schaeffer

Mildred JoAnn (Kunkel) Schaeffer was born on October 15, 1942 in Oregon, Missouri. She was one of five children of Edwin Walter “Ed” and Essie Mae (Hughes) Kunkel.

JoAnn grew up in Oregon and attended Oregon High School, graduating in 1960.

On April 2, 1960 she married Ralph “Pood” Schaeffer. They became parents of two children. Pood passed away in 2011.

JoAnn and Pood opened the Forest City Diner, and operated the restaurant for several years.

JoAnn passed away at the Oregon Care Center on January 27, 2025. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and sister, Nancy Williams.

Survivors include her children, Jeff (Mona) Schaeffer and Cindy (Mark) Wohlford, both of Oregon, Missouri; grandchildren, Kodee Schaeffer, Amy Morris, Becca Schaeffer, Renae (Greg) Collins and Rachel (Ryan) Ottmann; great grandchildren, Jaxon, Ella, Ridge, Amelia and Audrie Schaeffer, Jernie and Jager Morris, Hayzen and Hanner Schuetz, Tanner and Rylie Collins and Lucy, River and Lillian Ottmann; her siblings, Robert (Nina) Kunkel, Columbus, South Carolina, Don “Eddie” (Carol) Kunkel, Overland Park, Kansas, Donna (Ben) Whited, Yukon, Oklahoma and brother-in-law, Steve Williams, Monticello, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.

Services: 11:00 am Friday, January 31, 2025 at Chamberlain Funeral Home, Oregon, Missouri, where the family will greet friends beginning at 10:00. Interment at Maple Grove Cemetery, Oregon. Memorials to the Maple Grove Cemetery or Holt County Cancer Fund.
