JoEllen Kay (Calkin) Mathews, 75, passed away in St. Joseph on Aug. 1, 2018. She was born Sept. 25, 1942 in St. Joseph to Dr. Howard and Helen (Terry) Calkin.
JoEllen graduated from Oregon High School in 1960. She attended Carl’s Beauty School in St. Joseph. JoEllen worked as a beautician and later taught at the beauty school. She also worked at Walmart as a pharmacy technician and as a cashier.
On August 20, 1961 she married Edward L. “Eddie” Mathews. He passed away in 2006. In addition to her husband, Eddie, she was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son.
Survivors include daughters, Chani Frady of St. Joseph, Missouri, and Chelle Seitz of Fulton, Missouri; son, Craig (Lynne) Mathews of Golden, Colorado; brother, Mike Calkin of Kincaid, Kansas; sisters, Carol Miller of Wasilla, Alaska, Veva (Merle) Larson of Oakland, Iowa, and Winona (David) Onstott of Mint Hill, North Carolina; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Bill Yeary of Kansas City, Missouri; and five grandchildren, Jordan and Courtney Frady, Jory Seitz, Josh O’Toole, and Calvin Mathews.
Family visitation: Sun., Aug. 5, 2018, 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm, Chamberlain Funeral Home, Oregon. Funeral services: Mon., Aug. 6, 2018, 10:30 am, United Methodist Church, Oregon. Interment: Maple Grove Cemetery, Oregon The family requests that those attending wear colorful clothing.
