Johnnie "Mic" M. Trauernicht

January 29, 1945 — July 2, 2022

Essex

Johnny M. “Mic” Trauernicht was born January 29, 1945 and passed away on July 2, 2022 at the age of 77. He was the eldest son of John and Ella (Cook) Trauernicht, who, along with a younger brother Gerald Dean, preceded him in death.

Mic graduated from Craig R-III school in 1963, and after graduation went to work at the Hy-Klas grocery store and helped his dad on the farm.

On March 25, 1966 he married Vicky “Vic” Davis and in May of that year he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, taking basic training in Amarillo, Texas. In June he and Vicky left for Laughlin AFB in Del Rio, Texas where they spent his entire four years of active duty. Mic attained the rank of Staff Sergeant and was NCOIC of Airman Assignments. In 1968 their son Michael was born in San Antonio, Texas and later in 1970 Mic was honorably discharged.

After leaving the Air Force Mic and Vic moved to New Bloomfield, Missouri and Mic went to work for Montgomery Ward & Co. as a salesman in Jefferson City, Missouri. He was soon promoted to department manager and worked there until 1981. While in New Bloomfield their daughter Tonia was born in 1974.

Mic and Vic returned to Craig in 1981 and Mic went to work at the beef packing plant in Rock Port until it closed in 1984. He then accepted the job as custodian and bus driver with the Craig School District. Most will remember that while working at the school Mic took a lot of pride in the football field and made it one of the best fields in the conference.

In 1986 he enlisted in the Missouri Air National Guard where he served until 2004. He always said it was the best part time job ever, allowing him the opportunity to travel to many countries overseas and all over the United States, at the same time getting paid and receiving great retirement benefits. After 22 years with the school Mic retired in 2006.

In 2007 Mic and Vic moved to Essex, Iowa to be closer to their daughter and grandkids, but they would drive to Craig almost every Sunday to attend church. They were both members of the Nazarene Church and both served on the board, giving them time to visit friends and relatives. Once the church in Craig closed they became member of the Nazarene Church in Shenandoah, where Mic also served on the board. He was also a member and past commander of the Story-Hardin American Legion Post #164.

Mic is survived by his wife Vicky and son Michael of the home; daughter Tonia and husband Casey Radley; grandchildren, Cassie and wife Jeni, Kelsie and husband Nick Reed, Katie, Trenton and Courtnee; great grandkids, Aaliyah, Briahna and Richard, all of Essex; sister, Darla Schmidt of Craig; brother David and wife Dorothy Trauernicht of Craig; plus many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
