Julia E. Gilland

Julia E. (Walden) Gilland was born in Bigelow, Missouri on July 14, 1917. She was one of four children of James Nathaniel and Vina Elizabeth (Smith) Walden. Julia attended Bigelow school through the tenth grade, and went on to complete her GED at about age 70.
She married Carroll Gilland on August 13, 1934, and they became parents of four children. Carroll preceded her in death in 1989.
Julia worked for the Walnut Factory and did laundry for others. She also will be remembered working as a clerk for Bower’s and Hy Klas Grocery Stores, as a hostess for Hardee’s, writing local news for area newspapers; and cooking for Schoonover’s Café and the Mound City Nurtition Site.
Surrounded by her family, Julia passed away at her Mound City home on Monday evening, February 2, 2015 at the age of 97.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, James and Vina (Smith) Walden; sons, Jerry and Gary “Pepper” Gilland; brother, Charles “Buster” Walden; sister, Dorothy “Toots” Walden; and sons-in-law, Jack Wilson and Larry Mills.
Survivors include her daughters, Peggy Wilson and Carolyn Mills, both of Mound City; 14 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren; 47 great-great grandchildren; special friends Clara Stadalman and Steve Reynolds; and nieces and nephews.
Services: Friday, Feb. 6, 2015, 10:30 am, Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City. Family visitation: Tuesday, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City. Interment: Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorials: Mound City Nutrition Site or AseraCare Hospice.
