Mary E. Markt

Mary Elizabeth Markt of Oregon, Mo., passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the age of 104.

She was born on Nov. 24, 1911 in Oregon to John and Elizabeth Eleanor (Sutton) Markt. She was a lifelong resident of Oregon. Miss Markt graduated from Oregon High School in 1929 and then from Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, Mo. She remained an active NWMS alumni.

She taught in rural Holt County schools for 13 years, including White, Mayflower and Lincoln schools. She taught at Forest City Elementary School one year. She then finished her teaching career at Oregon Elementary School, teaching third and fourth grade for 31 years, retiring in 1976.

Miss Markt was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Oregon and taught a Sunday school class for many years. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Pricilla Club, and the Lincoln Friendship Club. She was a Meals on Wheel volunteer.

Miss Markt was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Anna M. (John) Shotwell; and brothers, John and Glenn “Jack” (Wilma “Billie”) Markt.

Survivors include a great niece, Linda Shotwell of California and great nephew, Jeff Shotwell, also of California.

She was interested in gardening and helping other people. She especially loved her pets.
