Mattie Lavone Thornton was born on April 14, 1927, in Whiting, Kansas, to Herbert and Goldie Pearl Pike. She graduated from Mound City High School in 1945.
After high school Mattie was a telephone operator in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was a longtime Mary Kay consultant and was a former member of Omega Club and Mound City School PTA. Mattie was a founding member of Mound City's Beta Sigma Phi chapter. She loved transporting her children and other students to band contests, church camps, and other events. In later years, Mattie enjoyed traveling the country in their motor home with her husband, Larry. Mattie loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mattie passed away on Mon., Jan. 22, 2018, at Tiffany Heights Care Center in Mound City at the age of 90.
Mattie was preceded in death by her parents; brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Margaret Pike, Gene and Marjorie Pike, James and Rita Pike, and Louise Pike; and her former husband, Walter Powell.
She is survived by her husband, Larry Thornton of Cameron, Mo.; children, Lynda (David) Elton of Blue Springs, Mo., Larry (Susan) Hall of St. Joseph, and Sheri Wright of Mound City; brothers, Herb Pike of Blue Springs, Mo., and Max Pike of Clinton, Mo.; former husband, Don Hall of Mound City; grandchildren, Seth Hall, Bruce Hall, Breanna Dykes, Ashley Markt, Mallory Elton, Brendan Wright, Shawna Farr and Kendra Bowen; 13 great grandchildren; and extended family and friends.
Services: Sat., Jan. 27, 2018, 4:00 pm, Chamberlain Funeral Home, Mound City, Missouri. Family will greet friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm Friday evening at the funeral home. Private family entombment: Mound City Mausoleum. Memorials: Mound City United Methodist Church or charity of donor's choice.
