Max M Shubert

December 6, 1927 — May 26, 2022

Mound City

Max M. Shubert, 94, of Mound City, passed away May 26, 2022, at the Oregon Care Center.

He was born on December 6, 1927, in Payne, Iowa, the only child of Bert and Georgia (McIlvain) Shubert.  Max graduated from Craig High School in 1945.

Max served in the U.S. Army from April 1946 to May 1947, and was stationed in Korea for several months leading up to the war.  After returning home from the service, he married his high school sweetheart, Winnie A. Randall, on August 3, 1947.  They were married for 57 years and became parents of five children.

Max and Winnie settled on a small farm outside of Mound City where they raised their family.  Max farmed, milked cows, and did custom fertilizing for several years before going to trade school to learn electrical, plumbing, heating and air-conditioning skills. He worked as a self-employed contractor in the Mound City area for over 40 years.  Max was a member of the American Legion and also served as the sextant for the Benton Church Cemetery from 1977 until resigning earlier this year.

Max had a variety of interests and was a source of knowledge and wisdom to his family.   If his kids needed help with anything, they knew they could always ask Dad.  Among his hobbies was bowling, gardening, and playing cards and other games with his family.  Spending time with his family was his greatest joy.

Preceding him in death was his wife, Winnie; parents, Bert and Georgia Shubert; two daughters, Peggy Shubert and Debbie Shubert; two granddaughters, Annetta and Carrie Shellito; and most recently, good friend, Dot Smith.

Survivors include his daughters, Becky (Steve) Shellito of St. Joseph, MO, and Sherry (David) Wilson of Forest City, MO; his son, Ron (Shelly) Shubert of St. Joseph, MO; eight grandchildren, Ben (Alexa) Shellito, Kayla (Derek) French, Michelle (Ryan) Brown, Angie (Charlie) Hughes, Amy (Pat) Ryan, Dave (Makayla) Wilson, Misty (Mark) Allen, and Jeremy Smith;  19 great grandchildren, Seth and Annora Shellito, Owen Max French, Kimber and Lanie Brown, Macy, Ty, and Kyli Hughes, Max, Maddie, and Lily Ryan, Ben Wilson, Jeffery and Levi Watts, Hudson and Parker Allen, and Austin, Josh, and Shelby Smith; and two great grandchildren on the way.   He is also survived by three nieces, several cousins, and many friends.

The family wishes to express its great appreciation to the staff of the Oregon Care Center and AseraCare Hospice for the wonderful care given to Max during his last days.
