Margaret A. “Peggy” Stone was born April 11, 1933 in Forest City, the youngest of nine children of Marion LeRoy and Katie (Fitzmaurice) Mitchell. Due to the hardships incurred with the death of her mother, seven of the nine children were raised in the Catholic orphanages in St. Joseph.
Peggy graduated from the Convent of Sacred Heart High School in 1950, and then attended Platt-Gard Business School in St. Joseph before beginning work at Swift & Co.
On Sept. 20, 1952, she married William E. “Bill” Stone, and they lived and farmed in the Forest City area. Peggy was a founding member of the Holt County Historical Society, active in the St. Patrick’s Altar Society, and a volunteer for many community organizations.
Peggy passed away on Oct. 31, 2014 at her St. Joseph home at the age of 81.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Bill; son-in-law, Dennis Huey; brothers, Eugene, Paul, Charlie, Jim and Bob Mitchell; and sisters, Wanda Hindery and Charlyne Bell.
Survivors include her children, Becky (Paul) Derks, Bobby (Ginny) Stone, Harvey (Mary) Stone, Rachel (Danny) Vandever, Kirby (Jeannie) Stone, Katie Stone, Mary Helen Huey, and Shannon Stone; her sister, Patricia (Clarence) Huycke; 42 grandchildren and great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial: Wed., Nov. 5, 2014, 10:30 a.m., St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Forest City. Private inurnment: Mount Olivet Cemetery, Saint Joseph. The family received friends Tuesday from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm at Chamberlain Funeral Home, Oregon, Mo. A rosary followed at 7:00 pm at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Memorials may be made to Sisters of Saint Francis, Savannah, Mo., or Conception Abbey, Conception, Mo.
