Richard Dean “Dick” Roberts was born on August 17, 1931 in Martin, South Dakota. He was one of four children of Ralph David and Edith Lillian (Thenell) Roberts. Dick graduated from Westboro, Missouri High School in 1949. He then attended Tarkio College on a basketball scholarship. Dick served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954.
A lifetime farmer in northwest Missouri, he married Carolyn (Rouse) Nauman on March 23, 1989. They made their home in Mound City, and Dick continued farming near Bigelow, Missouri.
Dick was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, and was a competitive marksman. He was also a member of the Story-Hardin American Legion, Post 164, Craig, Missouri. Dick was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, watching wildlife and gardening. He was known locally as the “Melon Man” for sharing his melon harvest. He was also a licensed pilot. Dick attended the First Christian Church, Mound City.
Dick passed away on Saturday, April 23, at a St. Joseph, Missouri hospital at the age of 90. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, David; sister, Ruth Henning, and granddaughter, Alicia.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn, of their Mound City home; children, Dennis (Susan) Nauman, Mound City; Dianna Doolan, Nampa, Idaho; sister, Carol Hartwell, Muskogee, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Josh (Suzanne), Jeff (Shelli), Donovan, Jared (Kailea), Marcus (Tanya), Emilie (Julius) and Travis (Ashley); 20 great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services: Thursday, April 28, 2022, 10:00 am, First Christian Church, Mound City, where the family will greet friends beginning at 9:00. Interment with military rites: Mount Hope Cemetery, Mound City. Memorials: Mount Hope Cemetery.
